Lymington rose to economic prominence in the Georgian period, the wealth was based on the production of salt in the salt pans west of the town. It is now a pleasant resort for visitors to the New Forest. It is the town that connects the New Forest to the Solent as well as the Isle of Wight. It has a long maritime history as a boat building town and as an exporter of salt. It is now a major yachting centre.
The town boasts an ancient Charter Market which is still running every Saturday selling anything from ironmongery to fruit. The High Street has a variety of shops and boutiques. On the picturesque Quay Hill there are shops of all kinds. There are many friendly pubs. Day boat trips operate from the Quay in the summer. Ferries to the Isle of Wight can be accessed by rail from the Station. In the summer there are also open topped buses which offer tours of the forest. The whole area is great for cycling and walking. Via the Solent way you can access the hamlet of Keyhaven and then on to the beaches of Milford-on-Sea or the historic Hurst Castle.
